Sponsor Licence Applications
Applies to all the UK-based businesses looking to hire all foreign nationals, including those from the European Union who wish to work in the UK

To hire individuals who reside outside of the United Kingdom, your company must obtain a Sponsors Licence from the Home Office. This requirement applies to all foreign nationals, including those from the European Union who wish to work in the UK, either in paid or unpaid roles.

The Sponsorship Licence was introduced to regulate genuine visa applications and manage the immigration process more efficiently, ensuring that only approved companies can participate in various types of visa applications for business immigration objectives in the UK. Following Brexit, the immigration regime mandated that unless a European national had secured settled or pre-settled status, their hiring companies would be required to issue them with an appropriate work visa. To do this, the UK-based company itself must have a Sponsor’s Licence. This led to an easing of the rules to some extent in obtaining Sponsor Licences, as many businesses were keen on retaining their EU-based workforce.

However, the changes also opened avenues for many non-European Union nationals and gave companies an opportunity to thrive with the addition of an international workforce. The relaxed regulations allowed businesses to explore a wider talent pool and bring in Skilled Workers from various countries, provided they meet the necessary visa requirements, and the company holds a valid Sponsor’s Licence.

Work visa routes allowed under Sponsor Licence

The Sponsor’s allows on boarding of international recruitment through various routes that include:

  • Skilled Worker visa
  • UK Expansion (Global Business Mobility)
  • Secondment Worker (Global Business Mobility)
  • Charity Worker
  • Religious Worker
  • Seasonal Workers

How to obtain a Sponsor Licence

To successfully obtain a Sponsor Licence, the sponsor company must meet a range of general and route-specific requirements set by the Home Office. These include demonstrating that your firm is legitimate and lawfully operating in the UK, proving your credibility and reliability, and most importantly, showing that you can fulfil the duties of a Sponsor, such as record-keeping and reporting obligations outlined in the Sponsor’s guidance. As a Sponsor Licence holder, you can employ both Workers and Temporary Workers.

Permanent Worker Licence

A Permanent Worker licence is issued to companies that require the services of qualified foreign professionals for various durations. These could range from temporary to permanent positions. This type of licence includes the following categories:

  • Skilled Worker
  • Scale-up Worker
  • Senior or Specialist Worker Visa (formerly known as the Intra-company Transfer visa)
  • Minister of Religion
  • International Sportsperson

Temporary Worker Licence

If your Sponsor Licence covers temporary workers, you can support visas for temporary work, volunteering, or job shadowing.  This type of licence includes the following categories:

  • Charity Worker visa
  • Creative Worker visa
  • Government Authorised Exchange visa
  • International Agreement visa
  • Religious Worker visa
  • Seasonal Worker visa

It’s critical to ensure that the type of visa you plan to Sponsor is within the scope of your Sponsor Licence to avoid suspension or revocation.
